March

1st to Mid March

Clematis:  Hard Prune Jackmanii and other ‘hard prune’ varieties of Clematis.  Give 1st feeding & liming of Clematis now.

HerbsPerennial herbs can be planted now.  Sage, Oregano, Parsley, Lavender, Catnip & chives to name a few.  Note:  Lavender

Hosta:  Divide if needed before they reach 4 inches tall and the leaves uncurl.  Feed with an ORGANIC fertilizer like fish emulsion, Bradfield, or Green Lightnin.

Lawn Care:    Apply spring application of Earth Right about 1 week before applying any fertilizer.  It will enable the fertilizer to work better, and break up your hard clay lawn.  Apply application of Hummert’s Pre-emergent Crab Grass Control.   The first time you mow this spring, mow very short.  This will give you a prettier lawn all season.  Mow often.  Mowing stimulates Blue Grass & RTF to spread new rhizomes more quickly, giving you a thicker, lusher lawn.  Get rid of dandelions, hen bit, and other broadleaf weeds early with Weed Free Zone or Speed Zone, they works great in cooler temperatures.

Pansies and violas can be planted any time.  They arrive at Heartland about the 1st of March.

Peonies:  Feed, and place peony cages in place NOW!

Perennials:  Weather permitting:  Remove mulch from perennials, and give a feeding of ferti•lome Start n Grow.   Divide as needed.   Plant new perennials as soon as the ground can be worked.

ShrubsIf you need to prune flowering shrubs wait until AFTER they have bloomed.  But don’t wait too long.  Try to do it within 2 weeks after the end of the bloom.  If you wait too long you’ll prune off next years blooms.

Vegetables:  Plant cole crops such as cabbage, broccoli, peas, cauliflower, radishes, strawberries, carrots, spinach, onions, lettuce, as soon as soil can be worked.  They grow best in the cooler temperatures of spring.  None do well when it’s too warm.

March 17.  St. Patrick's Day is the traditional day to plant potatoes.

  Mid to End March

Continue planting new perennials, roses & shrubs.

Roses:  Weather permitting, remove cover or mulch from roses.  Cut back any dead wood.  Trim back live canes no more than 1/2 way back if desired.  Apply 1st application of Bayer 3 in 1 Rose Food.  It will take care of feeding, insects, and disease for 6 weeks.  Refresh the mulch around roses.  You want to have a two inch layer (after settling).
